The Guardian Herd: First Impressions of a Book Tour

Howdy folks, Jennifer here ruminating after the first week of The Guardian Herd Tour! I'm such a mix of greenhorn and old ranch hand when it comes to writing and publishing. I know a lot, but a lot is new. I've leaped from aspiring writer, to self-published writer, to traditionally published writer, and
each stage has a learning curve.

So here are my first impressions after week one of The Guardian Herd: STARFIRE Tour.

September New Release by Author Marilynn Dawson

Today I'd like to introduce you to Marilynn Dawson and her non-fiction September new release!
Becoming the Bride of Christ
"Becoming the Bride of Christ chronicles my personal journey as I learn to live with God as unseen Husband and Father in the home. It's about learning to appropriate many Scriptural concepts that we've overly spiritualized, and bringing them down to where life is lived every day. This book can be read as an account of the lessons God's actively teaching me, or it can be engaged in as a personal or group Bible study." Marilynn Dawson

Day 156--New Release by D.M. Andrews, Jack MacFadden and the Faerie Realm

I am pleased to announce the newest release by D.M. Andrews,
a contemporary fantasy titled
Jack MacFadden and the Faerie Realm.

About: Since he was a young boy, Jack MacFadden's imaginary friend, Puck, has always been around, but now Jack's thirteen, and Puck's still shown no sign of leaving.

And, if that wasn't enough, Jack's also been targeted for assassination by a faerie death squad...

Jennifer: What inspired you to write Jack MacFadden and the Faerie Realm?

D.M. Andrews: I've always had an interest in the folklore of the British Isles, so it was quite easy for me to set it there. I wanted to try my hand at something shorter and in a first-person perspective. I've never written a story from that point of view before, or one at just 25,000 words. So it was a bit of an experiment. It was also a bit of a thank-you piece to some of my friends who'd helped spread the word about my first novel, The Serpent in the Glass.

Jennifer: What age group is this book for and is it a series or a stand-alone book?

D.M. Andrews: It's written as a stand-alone book, but is certainly open to sequels. I intended the age group to be early Young Adult, but both middle-graders and adults would probably also enjoy it.

Jennifer: Describe your writing process.

D.M. Andrews: Yes, I must get one of those one day ;) I aimed at a chapter per day, but I think it probably worked out nearer to a chapter every week. I had an idea of what would happen at the end and the beginning, but pretty much took all the chapters in between as they came. I found writing in first person gave me a more defined way to move the story forward (i.e. it was all about Jack's feelings and perceptions).

Jennifer: What is your marketing plan for your books?

D.M. Andrews: Currently "The Serpent in the Glass" is undergoing a major re-edit. Once that is done I'm going to include a link/ad for Jack MacFadden at the back, and then promote either the latter or former (I've not decided yet) via KDP Select free promotion days. Other than "natural" growth, I've really found it the most productive way to make a book visible on Amazon; though it will be interesting to see how the new algorithms will affect the result.

Jennifer: What is your next project?

D.M. Andrews: The re-edit of The Serpent in the Glass by my editor, RJ Locksley, is about done. After I've reviewed and republished it I shall do some more promotion work and then move on to one of my other projects. I have a number on the go, though I really should finish the one that is the most complete (a YA fantasy). I'm also going to have to think seriously about a sequel to Serpent - or I shall start getting death threats! ;) Readers can keep an eye on my projects at http://www.writers-and-publishers.com

D.M. Andrews has been drawing maps, writing stories, and coming up with weird ideas since the age of twelve. Although fantasy features in most of the author's writing, he also has a keen passion for history (especially for his native land of England), genealogy, mythology, and even political philosophy.

Day 152--Authors: Prime the Pump!

It may appear I haven't been writing, but that couldn't be farther from the truth!

Click HERE to view my progress on The Winged Herds of Anoch,, my latest MG.

The discipline of writing in this blog every single day primed my pump. Now I'm overwhelmed with words and ideas. Every morning I rise at 6am and commute twenty feet to my office. The coffee is pre-set and I eat a banana for breakfast because I can't risk waking up the kids by making noise in the kitchen (some of you know what I mean!).

This latest book, the Winged Herds of Anoch, fell into my head, fully-formed like Venus. For the first time in my life, I feel like the book is writing me!

Has anyone else felt like this?

I haven't and this is my fifth book. When I was nineteen, I wrote The Spotless Forest, a MG novel. I have not sought publication for it. It has to be re-typed into a modern computer (and I'm sure it needs a major edit.) A few years later I wrote a book for adults, and I have since lost it, but it was the worst book I've ever written, and I have no doubt of that. I went on to write The Pet Washer (MG, 34,000 words), then Dead Girls Don't Cry (YA, 70,000 words), and now The Winged Herds of Anoch (upper MG, approx. 55,000 words). I will finish The Winged Herds of Anoch this week, and like I said, this book is writing me! It's amazing and I can't wipe the smile off my face!

To Do: Write daily, finish what you start, and then start another as soon as you finish! It primes the pump, sharpens your skills, and offers opportunities. One day--one book--will change your life, but it all starts with the first book.

Day 151--Phropheticus Blog Tour

Author Emma Daley has stopped by today with a teaser for the Propheticus Blog Tour!

Majesta was a town west of Tyrana about ten miles or so. It looked like a giant ancient amphitheater smothered by vines after an earthquake. The stone houses that dotted the large rocky steps leading down to the center of the village looked as though they were falling to pieces. Jagged blocks of stone looked as if they were ready to be pulled from the structure, but the way the ancient tribes built them you could have rammed the houses with a giant gavel and they wouldn’t have budged. Majesta was known for being a city of warriors and intellect. But the city itself held a certain enchantment. When I was younger, I remember Ma taking me there to trade for clothes and supplies. The forests that surround Majesta hum with the sound of birds and smell like smoke and sweet cedar. When you come out of the forest into the view of the city, it’s like witnessing magic for the first time. Sun hits each building and lights them up like waster crystals, and the vines look as if they are trying to protect its golden streets.

About Emma Daley

At only the age of three, you could find Emma perched in the center of the dining table, a tape player in her lap, while the other kids gathered to listen to her recite her own creative version of her favorite tales like "Jack and The Bean Stalk" or "Peter Pan". Her imagination was fueled when she signed up for a high school Greek Mythology class. It was there in high school Mythology class that Emma found her dream. Her teacher recognized her talent, and encouraged her to pursue a career in the one thing that brought her imagination to life, writing. As a military wife and with life's fast pace and strenuous demands, it wasn't until she was 26 that she finally decided to pursue those long forgotten dreams. She started her very first novel Propheticus in November of 2008, which will be released in December of 2010 and is working on the 2nd and 3rd sequels, with several other book ideas on the shelf waiting to be dusted off and put into words.

Blurb about Propheticus:

This is a self published, sci-fi fantasy book set in an ancient universe. Four destined characters run into each other by chance and discover their pasts connect them in a prophecy to destroy some of the universes most gruesome creatures. The mystery of Aniah's past begins to unravel when she meets a stranger in the desert outside her ranch on the planet Delucia. Strange things start to happen around the ranch and Aniah experiences horrible nightmares of a dark creature the longer this stranger stays and the more she begins to question her fathers disappearance years ago. This story takes you to other worlds and although the first novel offers a little more romance and mystery with some thriller, the other novels in the series have more action and adventure in them as the characters travel the universe and visit incredible worlds. Sample from the book: There is something frightening about the way a hateful, unknown creature looks back at you. The way its beady red eyes snarl at you, and it's cheek curls with a hiss to reveal the greedy canines beneath. It is one thing to dream of this beastly creature, and it is another to have it inches from your face, its warm ungodly breath on your cheek, and its pallid gray bones reaching to devour you. My name is Aniah, and once my world was safe. But like many others throughout the universe-and here on the planet Delucia-fate would have me meet with the Mangitori de Sangue; an ancient army of blood-lusting creatures who have been frightening and devouring the inhabitants of the universe for decades. My fate brings me deep into their world. In fact, it is written somewhere-and the stories have been told long before I was ever born-of a prophecy wherein a young woman with the heart and soul of an angel will lead the universe in a victory against the Mangitori de Sangue. I am that woman. I just have to stay alive long enough to figure out how.

Day 150: Blog Stop with Molly Snow, Author of the BeSwitched Series

Book #3
Welcome to The Jennifer (Author) Diaries, take a rest and enjoy an interview with author, Molly Snow. The next stop on Molly's virtual tour will be tomorrow at Jeanz Book Read N Review.

Molly Snow released the third book in her BeSwitched Series, Royally BeSwitched,  on June 10, 2012. I have the pleasure of interviewing her today.

Jennifer: Please describe the premise of your BeSwitched Series.

Molly: A black cat is cursed to switch bodies with lonely souls when she runs away from her witch. The adventures she has are always worth the price, though. They are YA books that deal a lot with teen love and drama, like bullying and first kisses.

Jennifer: Your book covers are enchanting. Do you have team behind your books--cover designer, editor, proofreader--or do you handle all of it yourself?
Book #1

Molly: I put together all but one cover for my company Breezy Reads.com. I order stock images, modify them and place them together just right. BeSwitched, the first in my series, is the only book where I custom ordered a drawing from an artist.

The team is small. There are a couple beta readers, who mostly check plots for any gaps. I do the majority of editing and design.

Jennifer: Please tell us your top three, most successful book marketing tips.

Molly:
(a) Blog tours. They get me reviews and fans and some sales. It’s a lot of work, but I think it is worth it.

(b) Twitter. There is more to Twitter than meets the eyes I didn’t know that you can have active conversations in Twitter chat rooms, for instance! It’s also a great place to spread the word about giveaways.

(c) Having a series. My sales, although nothing to brag about at this time, are better because of having three books to a series released. Fans come back and buy more, to see what the characters are up to. It has also branded me as an author.

Jennifer: You have an active blog. How do you attract readers and what do you blog about the most?

Molly: I actually rarely blog. I blog around once or twice a month. I read John Locke’s book and he says he does the same, so I try not to worry about it. Posting things that involve others, like giveaways, has been my best method. I am interviewing Kathy from the popular blog I Am a Reader, Not a Writer on my blog today... Check it out.

Jennifer: Where have you submitted your series for book reviews?

Molly: Quite a few places. If you Google BeSwitched, you will find reviews on all sorts of blogs. Most of the reviews get posted to Goodreads too. I contact a circle of YA book bloggers and most of the time they say yes to reviewing. For my blog tours, I have placed sign up forms on my blog and received review requests, and I will also get an occasional review request through Goodreads.

Jennifer: What online sites do you use to network with authors, publishers, editors, or readers?
Book #2

Molly: I mainly use Twitter and Goodreads to talk with book bloggers. Book bloggers are to be my best friends in this business.

Jennifer: What advice would you give aspiring authors about self-publishing?

Molly: The actual publishing process is simpler than I imagined. The work up front is tremendous, however, if you want to produce something worthwhile.

Jennifer: What do you think authors should know about book marketing?

Molly: I think it is a necessary thing, for most of us, to boost rankings. I would say to not forget your audience and cater to them.

Jennifer: What did you enjoy the most when writing Royally BeSwitched?

Molly: I loved having Surla, the cat, and her human crush, Jax, go back to the 1700s. It was a romantic setting at the chateau. Getting the prince to fall in love with a peasant (Jax's predecessors) was a lot of fun. Black Magic spells were amazing: a black sea with "seaweed snakes," skeletons that walked like spiders, love potions, and much more.

Jennifer: What projects are you working on now? Will there be a fourth book in the BeSwitched Series?

Molly: Yes, I am working on Book 4 of The BeSwitched Series, and am over 18,000 words into it. I have yet to determine its title and I think it will be the last of the series. I wonder sometimes if I can do spin-offs, but I think I will work on a new series after this.

I am also working to release a contemporary romance by author, Stan Crowe. He is a very talented writer who really wanted to be on board with Breezy Reads. His book, The Cinderella Project, is due out August 30th.
Molly Snow

Then there is the 3rd release in The Zoey and Claire Mystery Series with a pub date TBD. The title of the book is Hexes and Xs, and is more than halfway complete.

As you can see, I enjoy the whole process of publishing, not just the writing :-)

Molly Snow, Founder of BreezyReads.com, wrote BeSwitched when she was just sixteen. As a bestselling author’s personal assistant at age twenty, she decided to do what her boss did and self publish. At age twenty-three, BeSwitched made its debut. Snow is married to her high school crush, has a set of silly twin boys and a bob-tailed cat named Meow-Meow.

Day 130--The Recession and The Starving Artist

I feel compelled to share this today.

I've been raising kids for the last fifteen years. The recession has hit my family hard and the money I earn from The Pet Washer is not enough to fill in the gaps, so I applied online for a part-time job at a bank last night. This is the automatic email they sent me.

"We have received your resume and appreciate your inquiry in a career opportunity with our organization.

During the next two weeks, we will review your qualifications and our open positions and determine whether a match exists.
If it does, we will schedule a further discussion with you. If you do not hear from us during the two-week period, we were unable to find a suitable position for you. As we receive hundreds of resumes every month, we apologize that we cannot personally respond to every resume submitted to us to discuss why we will not be moving forward.

Again, thank you for expressing an interest in employment with (name of bank). We wish you all the best in your job search."

Seriously? Hundreds of resumes each month?

I also sent my new novel to literary agents yesterday. This is the automatic email one of them sent me.

"Thank you so much for your query.

Please note that, per our submissions policy,
we are no longer able to respond to every submission. We receive such a high volume of submissions that a personal response to all is unfortunately no longer possible. We regret that we can't send a personal response to every author, but we continue to read and consider every query carefully, and we are grateful for the opportunity to consider your work.

If we are interested in seeing more of your work, we will contact you
at the email address you provided. If you have not heard from us
within 6 weeks, please assume that the material submitted is not right
for our agency at this time.

Thank you again for thinking of us and considering our agency. We look
forward to reading your work!"

It appears the odds of getting hired match the odds of getting published. Starving artist, phooey, how about just starving!

To Do: Don't give up! The odds may not be in my favor, but I'm not going to stop trying. Wayne Gretzky said, "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take."

Day 113--Maximizing Your Email Signature

Most, if not all, email platforms offer email "signatures". These are pre-set footers you can customize and attach to all your outgoing emails.

This is built-in advertising you don't have to think about or pay for. Everyone you email every day will know you wrote a book or have an author blog! Repetition builds curiosity and curiosity can lead to sales and continued free promotion through word of mouth.

Maximizing the Email Signature in Three Easy Steps
  1. Decide what you want to promote--your book, your website, or your Amazon product page for instance.
  2. Add text to describe what you are promoting i.e., "Please visit my author website for news about my latest book, The Wishing Star." or "Find my book on sale at Amazon today." or "Let's be friends on Goodreads." Then add the link.
  3. Preview your signature from another computer. Please don't skip this step! My signature has been set up incorrectly for years. I had chosen a fancy font and colors and, while I could read it from my computer, it looked like Greek or Russian or Arabic on other computers. I had no idea the intrigue I was creating until a fellow blogger pointed it out to me. I appeared to be some kind of double agent, writing in English and sending messages in other languages. Exciting! Maybe. Smart marketing, not so much.
This is my current signature.

Please visit my author blog to follow my progress and to read interviews with other authors!

Day 90--Managing Time And Social Accounts With Hootsuite

I signed up for Hootsuite today. Hootsuite works with Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Foursquare, Ping.fm, WordPress, MySpace and Mixi. The purpose of Hootsuite is to manage multiple social accounts from  one dashboard. There is a free account and a Pro account for 5.99 a month. I signed up for the free account.

My Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn accounts are already synched. When I tweet, my message shows up on LinkedIn. When I post on my author Facebook page, the post is automatically published on Twitter. Sometimes, I don't like this automation. Some tweets are for Twitter only and some posts are best suited for Facebook. Why? Because I use Twitter for marketing and Facebook Fan Pages for connecting with readers who already know me.

I chose to sign up for Hootsuite because it logs me onto all my social accounts in one place. When I compose a message, I can click on which social accounts I'd like it to appear. I like the control. With the free account, I get to add 5 social accounts for free. I added my two Twitter accounts, my author fan page, LinkedIn and my personal Facebook page.

The second reason I chose Hootsuite is because I can schedule my tweets and posts to be sent later. I can choose any date and time for years into the future. Now, I'm not scheduling my tweets into 2014, but I do like scheduling them in advance. As a mom, I never know when I'm going to have time to post. If I'm up at midnight and I know I'll be busy the next day, I can write and schedule all my social posts on the spot. Then I can enjoy the following day off the computer while Hootsuite takes care of my marketing. It's the next best thing to cloning myself!

I wrote previously about SocialBro, which is a Twitter-only app and offers completely different services than Hootsuite. However, one of their services works well with Hootsuite. SocialBro analyzes my Twitter community and generates for me a report called "Best Time to Tweet." Using this information, I can schedule my tweets accordingly on Hootsuite.

The unexpected benefit of Hootsuite is the free URL shrinker. When I add a link to my message, I click "shrink" and it's automatically shortened for me. Long URL's take up precious character spaces. When you only have 140 to work with, it's helpful to shrink those long URL's. Rather than sign up for a URL shortening service, Hootsuite takes of it for me.

Complicated? Yes and no. The idea is that all of this simplifies my life. There is an initial learning curve, but then these services streamline my day and my time. Any service that frees me up to write is worth using.

Having said all this, I don't believe in spamming or robo-tweeting. There is a fine line between pro-active marketing and spamming. I tweet and post to help others most of the time. For every ten tweets, one might include a link to purchase my book. My primary goal is exposure, not sales. I think my intentions are the difference.

To Do: Don't know how to clone yourself? Try Hootsuite.

Day 79--The Best Blog You're Not Following

Before I tell you why I follow ProBlogger, please allow me to explain the story behind the title I chose for this post.

Do you remember the television show, Party of Five? It had loyal followers, but not many of them. In 1995, TV Guide named it "The Best Show You're Not Watching". This was when I became aware of the show and starting watching it, along with many others. It ended up winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Drama in 1996. The rest is history.

The show was good, but TV Guide's article was genius. Everyone wanted to know, what's the best show I'm not watching? Weren't you curious when you read my title? That article put Party of Five on the map. I've wanted to use a title like that for a long time and today, I chose to apply it to this post.

Now I'm not insinuating ProBlogger needs my help to get on the map. It's already an icon in the blogging industry. However, most of my readers are fiction authors like me, and I don't hear a lot of chatter about ProBlogger in the author communities to which I belong.

ProBlogger is just that, a blog about professional blogging. If you're not a pro blogger, you may wonder how this blog can help you.

As a fiction author and a blogger, ProBlogger has become the source I rely upon the most. Not for networking, but for business and marketing management. I have quantifiable success with the tips I glean from ProBlogger. These tips help me with my books, my brand, my own blog, growing my fan base, my productivity, my marketing, my email newsletters, networking and the whole business of being me.

ProBlogger's founder, Darren Rowse, practices what he preaches. ProBlogger itself is an exemplary example of how a professional blog should look and read. It's clean, organized, helpful and relevant. The advertising is not obnoxious. The fan base is large. Its reputation in the blogging community is stellar.

While there are many guest posters, they follow the founder's writing style and quick-scan format. You will never waste your time on ProBlogger reading superfluous words. Posts are as short as they can be while delivering executable, clear steps to the reader.

Best of all, ProBlogger is free. Nothing is asked of me at ProBlogger. I'm not spammed and no one harps on me to buy their product. I don't have to subscribe to read it, but I do subscribe for the ease of automatic post delivery. ProBlogger doesn't use gimmicks. Bloggers flock to the site because it helps them. It's the real deal.

ProBlogger has opened my eyes to the layers of opportunities that exist online. I have a hard time keeping up with all the tips I want to apply to marketing my book and my brand. I'm not just a reader, I'm a fan.

To Do: Start following ProBlogger! If you already follow ProBlogger, please link to a post that has helped you in the comment form below!

Day 78--Pinterest for Authors

If you haven't heard of Pinterest, you have now! It has swept the internet like wildfire. It's not even close to reaching its full potential yet and it's evolving daily. Authors can't afford to ignore new social media when it's our job to connect with people. Remember MySpace? My fourteen year old doesn't.

I resisted Pinterest out of sheer stubbornness. I had no desire to harass all my friends again with friend requests. I just inundated them with requests from Goodreads, LinkedIn and Twitter. I'm trying to build my followings there. To add a new site is exhausting. I want to be done! Besides, how could Pinterest help an author? And what is it anyway?

Pinterest is a virtual pinboard. It helps you organize and share things on the web that you find useful, pretty, interesting or whatever. Members create virtual cork boards and pin stuff to them. For instance, a gal planning her wedding can pin photos of dresses, cakes, flowers, invitations and then evaluate all her ideas in one place. When she clicks on a photo, it will taker her right back to the site from which she pinned it. Besides weddings, the most popular uses I've heard for Pinterest are craft, redecorating and recipe ideas.

But how can Pinterest help an author? I just joined and I can't fully answer that yet. I think the better question is, how can it hurt?

It's like the old saying, there's no such thing as bad publicity. There's no such thing as being too connected on the internet! My goal is to be easily found. Besides the obvious advantages of being visible, I link back to my book everywhere I'm a member. The internet is called the web for a reason. Think of each link as a strand of your web. The more links you build from different websites, the larger your web. The larger your web, the more "flies" you will catch.

This was the first reason I signed up for Pinterest--exposure. The second was to stay in touch with what's new and what's hot in social media. Since joining, I've discovered more reasons to join. Readers create virtual boards of their favorite books. If your book gets pinned, it can end up getting re-pinned (much like a re-tweet) and news of your book can spread this way. You don't have to be a member for this to happen, but if you are a member, you can be the first to pin your book and maybe get the ball rolling.

Once you join, you should probably do some pinning yourself. I created a board called "Hot Book Covers". I love a good book cover and here I get to show off the ones I think are hot. Maybe I'll meet other readers, maybe I'll pin my new YA cover when it's done...but the other thing I learned about Pinterest is that it's fun!

Here an example of a cover I pinned

Click here to see all the covers I pinned last night. I didn't understand how Pinterest could be fun or useful until I did it. I would like to decorate my kids' bedrooms and I'm excited to create boards for that and pin all my ideas in one place. I recommend that you try it, if you haven't already, and pin what you like. Writers have hobbies, focus on those and the relationships will follow. Opportunities will arise to connect with fans and promote your book over time.

Here is an article from ProBlogger with specific Pinterest marketing tips. These tips are great for bloggers who sell books or anything else.

Day 70--SocialBro, An Impressive Free Twitter Tool

I learn from everyone who blogs, tweets and posts. I picked up a random tip today and downloaded the SocialBro app for Twitter. I will admit, I didn't "get" Twitter for a long time. All I saw was a one-dimensional world.

SocialBro has opened my eyes! When I got my Twitter account, I was only seeing the tip of the iceberg. SocialBro is exposing the massivity of this thing (I know massivity is not a word, I'm coining it!). Twitter rocks!

I still don't fully comprehend Twitter, but I'm a believer. Socialbro is a free app. Anyone can download it. The information it organizes and the tools it provides are invaluable if you are using Twitter to market anything.

Socialbro also lets you know who is not following you back so you can unfollow them. Have you ever noticed how someone with 4000 followers, follows about 4000 people? Or if they have 7000 followers, they follow around 7000 people? I noticed this trend before I understood it.

Twitter is like Goldilocks--picky. You can be banned or shunned for aggressive following, aggressive unfollowing, for tweeting too much, for tweeting too little, for churning, for stealing, for spamming, for getting followers too fast, for getting followers too slow or for having an imbalance between your followers and who is following you. With Twitter, you want to be just right!

When your followers closely equal your follows, you are in safe territory (unless you're a celeb, see below). The rest of it is trial and error for me. I have honest intentions, so I'm not concerned that I'll spam, churn, steal or be too aggressive.

    Who knew, right?

SocialBro exposed my Twitter weaknesses. I was following people who, after weeks, were not following me back. I got rid of all of them except the few professionals whose tweets I love, i.e. Darren Rowse at Problogger. I can only dream of the day he might follow me back!

Darren Rowse has over 150,000 followers and he follows about 600 people. This is an imbalance that is "allowed". A celeb type will generally have more followers than people they follow. It increases their influence and authority. Their tweets become valuable. They are not going to be shunned or kicked off of Twitter for being famous. In fact, their tweets carry all the more weight. If Ashton Kutcher were to tweet about The Pet Washer, my sales would go through the roof. Celebs play by a different set of rules. Twitter recognizes that.

It also shows me the people who follow me that I have neglected to follow back. I'm able to see them all in one place and rectify my oversight. Twitter is a marketing social website for me, not a personal one. I don't put pictures of my kids and pets on Twitter.I am looking to connect with a quantity of quality people, primarily, authors, readers, bloggers, editors and publishers. It's where I promote The Pet Washer. It's fun, but it's business.

SocialBro has given me a glimpse of the iceberg that is Twitter. The more I learn about Twitter, the more I realize how much there is left to learn. I'm excited to get a handle on this beast!

To Do: If you are looking to market yourself or your book, consider downloading SocialBro today. Don't hit the iceberg, Twitter the iceberg!

Follow me on Twitter and I'll follow you back!

Day 68--Inexpensive Book Promotion Site for Authors

Via Twitter, I discovered World Literacy Cafe. I'm just getting to know this site. It's reputable and offers a lot for authors and readers.

World Literacy Cafe offers free and paid promotions from author interviews, character interviews, social media blitzes, book reviews, new release promotions and more.

    World Literary Cafe

The philosophy of the site creator, Melissa Foster, is generosity and reciprocity. Any successful person who advances themselves by helping others is on the right track as far as I'm concerned. I'm impressed enough by her site to recommend it and to use it myself.

Their stated mission is to bridge the gap between authors and readers.

Day 60--Three Reasons to Care About SEO

What is SEO and why should any of us care? SEO is the acronym for "Search Engine Optimization". Who cares about SEO? Bloggers care. Website owners care. Authors care.

    1) I care because I have a product to sell.

My goal is to promote my books, not my blog. Right? Wrong. It's both. I sign every post with my name and the name of my book. My book is for sale on this blog.

My blog readers are not the intended audience for my children's book, true. But the fortunes of my book and my blog are intertwined. I am first and foremost, the author of The Pet Washer Series and, soon, a YA novel. My blog's success can influence my books' success. We are a package deal.

    2) I care because readers complete me.

The transaction of writing is not complete without a reader. Who wants to blog into space for eternity, never to hear an echo back? I don't. I'm addicted to readers. Readers bring my words to life.

If you have a blog or a website, I'm guessing you want readers too. This is why SEO is so important. I started blogging in 2009. I did not understand SEO for my first two blogs. My friends subscribed and the rest of my traffic was accidental and insignificant. These blogs were personal so I didn't care. I wasn't selling a book or looking to network. I did want readers though and, I am here to tell you, they don't magically appear.

    3) I care because I want to network with others in my field.

This blog is about book marketing. Who knows the most about book marketing? Other authors! Through this blog, I'm meeting professionals in my industry. Many are more successful than I and they are willing to help. I've learned how to price an ebook, how to put on a successful speaking presentation and I've received reliable book marketing advice. See my page on guest posts to read these articles!

I've had the privilege of chatting with best-selling authors to brand-new authors, bloggers, book reviewers, cover designers and readers. I made a connection to a reputable copy editor who I ended up hiring.

There are few authors in my town. I need this online community to support me. If I don't optimize my SEO, they won't find me and we'll never connect!

How do you optimize your SEO now that you care?

This is the article I read today about how to optimize SEO. I found this article through a tweet by the Duolit self-publishing team, who referenced an article by Taleist who linked to a free, informative article on the subject by Brian Carter, founder of Copyblogger.

To Do: Check out Brian Carter's article and apply what you can to your blog or website. Sell your product, gain readers and make new friends! Again, this link is free and does not require your email address or account registration. It's a gift! Open it!

    Day 58--Creative Book Marketing

As much as I'm on the internet, it's important I don't overlook local marketing. There are opportunities to help my community and promote my book at the same time. Speaking in classrooms and libraries accomplishes this but why stop there?

There is a fundraiser on March 10, 2012 in my community. It's a father/daughter dance which benefits an MUN class and 8th grade graduation. There is a silent auction and raffle at the event. I heard they were looking for local "vendors" to donate products. The dance is for girls from 5th to 8th grade--the age range for The Pet Washer!

I donated two, autographed copies to the event. I'm thrilled to help MUN and 8th grade raise money while raising awareness of my book. I'm equally thrilled to know that two girls will go home with The Pet Washer! I can't wait for them to get to know my dear friends--Polly, Cianna, Caden, Daisy, Adeline, Gildon, Leroy, Tiara, Mr. Talley, Mia, Katie and everyone else!! These characters only come to life when a reader opens the book! It's a magical relationship.

To Do: Keep your eyes open for fundraisers and other events that might benefit from a signed copy of your book. My book fits this event because of the age group of the girls. My new YA novel would not be appropriate. Look for events attended by your target audience!

    Day 56--Email Marketing for Authors

Today I sent my monthly email newsletter. The email newsletter is better than any social marketing an author can do, in my opinion. Social media is NOW--if your audience isn't online when you post or tweet, they will probably miss your news.

Collecting email addresses and sending a monthly newsletter is a better way to connect. My news sits patiently in my readers' inboxes. It will be opened at their leisure, not mine.

I use Vertical Response for my marketing emails. There are other companies who offer this service, but I'm happy with Vertical Response. My email currently goes to 185 recipients and costs $2.78 to send all 185 at once.

I had too much trouble trying to send mass emails from my email hosting service, Yahoo. It's not set up for marketing. Vertical Response, and other email marketing services, specialize in keeping my email out of spam folders. I can send an email to hundreds or thousands of recipients with one click. VR offers attractive templates and graphics and gives readers a button to unsubscribe. I don't have to worry about forcing myself on anyone like I do with social media.

Click HERE to view my newsletter

The newsletter looks simple but it took some time to create. I made sure to include interactive links, font colors, different alignments and pictures for easy viewing.

Most importantly, I updated my friends and readers about exciting news and upcoming events. For those who don't want to keep up with  my daily posts, the monthly recap is the best way to get news about my writing and upcoming projects!

To Do: Create and send your own newsletter! Vertical Response is offering 500 emails for free. I haven't used other email marketing services, but I imagine most offer similar amenities and are just as good!
