Excellent and insightful article about working with editors on revising the manuscript. Love your definition of the writer's job "trapping the story" and your mother's definition of the editor's job "advocates for the reader".
I've never had a problem working with an editor on a nonfiction story, but I've struggled to surrender a fiction story to an editor whose only goal was to make the story clear for the reader.
